‘WE NEEDED THAT’: ARAPAHO DELIVERS GROUP 1 JOY FOR BAKER, KING

There was a time only a year ago when trainer Bjorn Baker couldn’t get a jockey to ride struggling stayer Arapaho.

But Rachel King answered the call from Baker and has been in the saddle as Arapaho has gradually rose through the staying ranks culminating with an upset win in the Group 1 $1.5m Tancred Stakes (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

Baker was relieved to finally snare his first major since Samadoubt won the 2019 Winx Stakes.

“We needed that Group 1 win,” Baker said.

“It’s so competitive in Sydney racing and you need a headline horse – thankfully I’ve got one.”
